let's enjoy...

try this again

Let's try this again. Fourteen years after Blizzard Entertainment released the first world in the World of Warcraft universe, the company has reached a major milestone.

More than 11.5 million players worldwide -- a number roughly equivalent to the population of the states of Missouri, Kansas and Iowa combined -- now pay up to $15 a month to fight and die with honor...or at least in 256 colors.

While not counting the cash from those monthly subscribers, the good folks at Blizzard credited the 11.5 million number to the Wrath of the Lich King, a WOW expansion pack. So far, Blizzard has sold 4 million copies of Wrath.

And yes, many of those copies will be under the Christmas Tree. You all know who you are.

"We’re pleased to welcome the new and returning players who have helped World of Warcraft reach these new milestones, and we appreciate the enthusiasm and support that the game’s global community has continued to show,” Mike Morhaime, Blizzard's CEO said in a release.

Of course, the computer gaming community reacted appropriately.

"Good Lord," noted Nicholas Deleon at CrunchGear.

"Assuming each subscriber pays $15 per month, that’s approximately $172.5 million per month in raw revenue. That’s quite a bit of coin."

Of course, the 11.5 million number doesn't actually mean 11.5 million people are coughing up the $15 a month subscriber fee to play WOW. Some are on borrowed time with a free month of time after buying the game ($40 or so for the expansion pack).

And then there's a few -- or at least one -- like "Prepared" who pays for 32 separate accounts so that he can conduct raids all by himself.

The Steel Series World of Warcraft MMO Gaming Mouse combines the functionality of 13 programmable buttons with a sexy armored look that's sure to catch the eye of even the most discerning WoW player.

Officially licensed by Blizzard from the cutting-edge accessory creators at Steel Series, the World of Warcraft Gaming Mouse seeks to deliver a winning combination of form and function, with a special WoW-themed configuration tool that lets you do everything from creating complicated macros to handle in-game actions to customizing the color and intensity of the device's LED glow.

Is the ambitious little device worth the $99 asking price, or should World of Warcraft give it a pass in favor of more traditional control methods?
